On a scale of 1-10 how dead are you to yourself? Are you at a 1, living every day according to how you want to? Are you at a 10, completely living for God? If we are being honest with ourselves, none of us are really at a 10, and where we fall at on the scale changes by the day. I can start Monday off strong, prioritizing my time with God, but as soon as the business of the week sets in, I’m back to 1. In today’s sermon, Pastor Ken unpacks what it truly means to follow Jesus according to Luke Chapter 9.
Jesus says in Luke 9:23-24,“If any of you want to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me. If you try to hang onto your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.” PK illustrated how it is so easy to let Jesus become the “icing on the cake” in our life. We get our job in order, our relationships in order, etc. and then decide we need Jesus to top it all off. Although Jesus is so, so sweet, He is not the icing. He is the cake, the substance of our life. All of our priorities should reflect the priorities of Jesus.
This isn’t easy; this means your life will look different than those around you. Deciding to follow Him is not a one-time thing. It is a choice we have to make each and every day. But while following Him means sacrifice and trials and discomfort at times, it also means walking side by side with the God of love and peace, who is chipping away at your old life and making something new out of it, something so much better than you could imagine!
So what will it be?
Will you wake up tomorrow and deny yourself? Will you wake up and decide “today, I will serve the Lord?”
